Birding in Sulawesi

Sulawesi is an almost mythical island in the middle of the transition zone between the Eurasiatic and Australasian biospheres. It’s one of the very few places where you can see Woodpeckers versus Lorikeets, Bulbuls versus Honey-eaters, and Drongos versus Megapodes. It has been isolated long enough from both regions to boast an incredible amount of endemic species and at the same time, it’s big enough to host big biodiversity. Many endemics are spectacular in beauty and behavior, like the many kingfishers, the incredible Maleo, and Wallace’s favorite the Yellow-billed Malkoha. Add up the special mammals, the good infrastructure, and the intriguing culture and you’ve found a destination you will never forget.
