Papua Birding Spots

Nimbokrang/Jayapura: lowland rainforest, with immediately beautiful birds of paradise such as King Bird-of-Paradise, Lesser Bird-of-paradise, Pale-billed Sicklebill, and Twelve-wired bird-of-paradise. But also Kookaburras, Parrots, and all the opulence of the tropical forest.

Arfak Montane Forest: highland rainforest, generally regarded as the best birding spot in Papua, with courtship sites of Magnificent Bird-of-paradise, Vogelkop Lophorina, Magnificent Riflebird, Lesser bird-of-paradise, Black-billed Sicklebill, and Western Pariota and the incredible gazebo of the Vogelkop Bowerbird and Masked Bowerbird.

Malagufuk: lowland forest with great biodiversity and many endemic colorful fruit pigeons, the bizarre Palm Cockatoo and many kingfishers, parrots (lories), and of course birds of paradise.

Waigeo: an island with rainforest and beautiful coast, stay in a Villa and resort, with courting Red bird-of-paradise, and Wilson’s bird-of-paradise as unique highlights with good photo opportunities. But snorkeling among the coral in the bay is also a wonderful option.

Attention

  • In the rainforest, it is sometimes difficult to watch birds (but we look at everything, so there is always something to see),
  • For courting birds of paradise you are usually in a hide (but we make sure we don’t have to spend too long there),
  • It will occasionally be slogging in the mud and the accommodations are generally fine but basic, in short: not for the faint of heart!
  • This is a trip with the Birding flavor, so it’s for serious birders who want to see as many bird species as possible.

TRIP CONSIDERATIONS
PACE: Moderate to Intense. This tour will require long days in the fields and early starts on most days. On some portions of the trip, especially those spent in the hot lowlands, we will have some time off in the middle of the day. At higher elevations, in the Arfak Mountains, the birding can stay active all day, and we will have a more intense pace.

PHYSICAL DIFFICULTY:
Moderate to occasionally difficult. A lot of the birding is on dirt roads and easy logging tracks and trails, although there will also be a few difficult hikes, some of which are optional.

CLIMATE:
Papua of Indonesia lies in the equatorial zone and is surrounded by warm tropical seas, with a humid tropical climate, and the many mountain ranges cause great variation in rainfall. This ranges from moderate to very high, some montane regions having more than 10,000 mm of rainfall per annum. Temperatures along the coast are hot, above 30 °C, but at very high altitudes it can drop below freezing at night, though snowfall is apparent only above 3800 m, and mainly in West Papua, where some relict glaciers remain. Clouds and fog are frequent, especially in the morning and late afternoon, though mornings typically are clear and sunny. Rain tends to come in the afternoon, often being quite heavy but sometimes not lasting for too long, although highland areas can experience quite long wet periods. Clouds cover the mountains and promote the growth of epiphytes and mosses, with very high humidity in the lowland and hill forests.
