Kawah Putih Ciwidey is a volcanic crater located 50 km south of Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. It is part of Mount Patuha, an andesitic stratovolcano, and has been relatively stable since its last significant activity around 1600. Opened to visitors in 1987, the crater is situated at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,970 ft), making it cooler than the humid lowlands, with temperatures around 10 °C (50 °F). The lake is highly acidic (pH 0.5–1.3) and changes color between bluish, whitish green, or brown depending on sulfur concentration, temperature, and oxidation levels. Surrounding rocks and sand are also bleached white due to the acidic waters. Since 2021, Kawah Putih has become a birdwatching hotspot, with around 110 bird species recorded, including Javan highland endemic birds.
